The Walla Walla Valley Amateur Radio Club hosted an exciting directional radio fox hunt, drawing enthusiasts and families from across the Walla Walla Valley and surrounding agricultural communities. Participants equipped with handheld VHF receivers, directional Yagi antennas, and attenuators set out to locate micro-transmitters hidden throughout local parks and wheat field countryside.
The transmitter hunt offered hands-on learning opportunities in radio direction-finding techniques, signal propagation analysis, and antenna theory. Beginners and experienced operators alike competed to pinpoint the hidden automated “fox” beacons in the shortest time, combining radio skills with outdoor adventure.
Club organizers emphasized that radio direction-finding is not only a fun competitive sport but also an invaluable practical skill for locating lost ELT emergency locator transmitters, tracking down radio interference, and assisting search-and-rescue teams. The club plans to host quarterly fox hunts throughout the region and invites newcomers to join the fun.
